Abstract
1402543 Gas/liquid and gas/solid contact apparatus K M V BOLAND 20 June 1972 [21 June 1971] 28991/71 Headings B1F and B1R [Also in Division F4] According to an aspect of the invention apparatus for passing gases through a flowing fluidised or non-fluidised bed of discrete solids or through a flowing liquid or liquids and suitable for catalytic and gas/liquid reactions, comprises one or more vessels each containing a set of overlapping members in descending echelon formation, the members mounted between the sidewalls of the apparatus and normal to the sidewalls, the walls forming the sides of a channel, with the members occupying subtantially the whole width between the sidewalls, with a gap between each member at the overlapzones of the members over substantially the whole width of the channel between the sidewalls for admitting gases into the bottom of the solids or liquids when flowing over the echelon, and with one or more of the members being arranged to pivot about its axis normal to the sidewalls such that the height of the said gap or gaps can be increased or decreased by turning the member or members on its pivot or pivots by the appropriate amount, the vessel or vessels having baffles extending over the entire width between the sidewalls and mounted above the overlapping members to maintain the materials flowing over the members at a substantially uniform depth. Apparatus according to another aspect of the invention suitable for heat treatment of materials and for use as a fluidised bed vessel or gas treatment vessel comprises apparatus similar to the above but without the baffles, wherein the overlapping members are in two or more formations, each formation comprising an ascending and descending formation, a gas plenum chamber also being provided. The plenum chamber may be filled with gas or oil burners or electrical heating elements. The echelon members may be electrical heating elements or may be arranged for steam or water to pass through them and may be made of copper or aluminium. The gas may be passed through the apparatus by a blower or an extraction in Fig 1 plates 4 are rotatable for altering the size of the gap between them and fixed plate 5 to thus control the rate and volume of gas from I flowing through solid or liquid material from 8 passing over plates 5 and 6. Adjustable baffles 11 maintain the materials at a reasonably constant depth. Fig 3 illustrates an arrangement for a non-flowing bed.
