Abstract

1402391 Making gas turbine buckets GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 26 March 1973 [3 April 1972] 14390/73 Heading B3A [Also in Division F1] A method of making an open-circuit liquidcooled gas turbine bucket 10 comprises filling grooves 13a, Fig. 2, in the surface of a bucket core 12 with material, depositing a porous coating 11 of a different material over the core and filling material, and heating the composite structure so formed to melt the filling material and draw it into the porous coating and bond the materials together and to the surface of the core. The grooves 13a are formed in the core surface during investment casting thereof, the grooves and coating 11 defining channels 13, Fig. 1, for cooling liquid. The channels are interconnected via manifolds 14 to exit opening 16 which leads to a collection shot 17 in casing 18. The porous coating, e.g. alloy steel or tungsten carbide, may be applied by flame spraying or plasma spray techniques, and the final firing to cause the filling material, e.g. Cu, Cu alloy, to leave the channels 13 by capillary action and enter coating 11 is performed in a H or CO atmosphere. The bucket exterior can then be finished to a smooth surface. Tines 19 are provided on the root of the bucket for mounting in grooves 23 of a rim 21 of a turbine disc 22 and joining by brazing. A plurality of such buckets joined to a rim in such a manner can then be furnace-brazed.
