Abstract

1402314 Polysulphone block copolymers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Jan 1973 [7 Feb 1972 7 Feb 1972] 5488/72 and 5489/72 Heading C3R An aromatic block copolymer has molecular chains comprising blocks of formula where n is at least 2, the blocks being linked by units -Ar-Q- and/or by a plurality of units -Ar-Q- linked to each other directly by -Ar- or -Ar-SO 2 -, where -Aris a phenylene radical and Q is -O-, -CO- or -CR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>-, where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are hydrogen methyl or phenyl. The block copolymers are obtained by oxidizing the corresponding polysulphides (which may already contain some sulphonyl groups). In examples polysulphides are prepared from bis-(4-mercaptophenyl) sulphone, bis-(4-ch<SP>5</SP>orophenyl) sulphone, potassium hydroxide and the potassium salt of 4-(4-chlorophenylsulphonyl) phenol, directly and in two stages, and oxidized to polymers consisting of blocks of p-phenylene sulphonyl groups linked by p-phenylene oxide groups; also, a polysulphide is obtained from bis-(4-mercaptophenyl) ketone, bis-(4-chlorophenyl) sulphone and potassium hydroxide and oxidized to a polymer consisting of blocks of p-phenylene sulphonyl groups linked by p-phenylene carbonyl groups; the polysulphides are oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in glacial acetic acid.
