Abstract
1402164 Electrophoretic apparatus for demonstrating antigens IMMUNO AG FUR CHEMISCH-MEDIZINISCHE PRODUKTE 13 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971 21 July 1972] 47398/72 Heading C7B A low-voltage apparatus for demonstrating antigens in body liquids by cross migration electrophoresis i.e. electrophoresis in which antigens and antibodies migrate towards each other under the influence of an electric field) comprises a vessel 1 for receiving buffer solution, the vessel being divided in the longitudinal direction by a separating dam 5 into an anode and a cathode compartment, each compartment having disposed therein an electrode 4 and 3, e.g. of Al. The dam supports a gel plate 7 cast in a pattern 9. Two rows of recesses or holes 10 and 10 'in the gel receive the antigens and antibodies. The current migration path in the gel (i.e. the distance through the gel between the points where it contacts the buffer solution through holes 13, 13 'in the pattern 9) is not more than 50mm and the rows of recesses or holes 10, 10 'are not more than 5mm apart. The vessel 1 and pattern 9 may be of heat sterilizable polypropylene. The buffer solution may comprise 5,5 diethyl-barbituric acid sodium salt, sodium acetate and citric acid and optionally a reducing agent such as sodium sulphite. Demonstration of the Australian serum hepatitis/hepatitis associated antigen (AU/SH/HAA) is referred to.
