1401475 Rolling; working at specified temperatures NIPPON STEEL CORP 18 Sept 1972 [18 Sept 1971 (3) 3 Dec 1971 5 June 1972] 43113/72 Headings B3A B3M and B3V [Also in Division G3] A method of producing steel plate having a change in thickness 3<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, part-way along its length comprises rolling a part of the length of the plate from one end thereof to reduce the thickness of that part with the rolling being effected with a finishing temperature in the range 680‹ to 1050‹ C. The plate may have a step portion on one or both sides. The finishing temperature may be between 680‹ and 850‹ C. when producing a step portion on both sides of the plate and between 850‹ and 1050‹ C. when producing an almost flat rolled surface and a tapered portion or stepped portion on the other rolled surface. In an example, steel of composition: C 0À13%; Si 0À22%; Mn 1À00%; P 0À02%; S 0À010%; and balance Fe was cast into slabs and heated to 1260‹ C. in a furnace. They were then transferred to a roller table where they were descaled and rolled in a four-high rough rolling mill, 2, 2-1. The slabs were finished rolled to the required plate thickness and the roll screw adjusted prior to rolling a differential thickness from the leading edge of the plate. The lower side of the differential thickness steel plate was flattened and the plate was then subjected to a hot leveller to adjust its shape and then cooled on a cooling floor. The rolling of the plates may be controlled using apparatus Fig. 12, comprising a preset device PS for adjusting a roll setting screw, sequence circuits SC1, SC2 for controlling normal or reverse rotation of the roller table of rolling mill R by a signal TFR, and rotation of the mill by a signal MFR and a computer CPU. A button PB provides for switching in operation of the differential thickness rolling and the computer is used to store initial data necessary for the rolling steps so that the unknown, intermediate values of differential thickness and length may be ascertained and controlled. The apparatus also includes a load cell LC, mill rotation meter PLG, thermometer TM and length indicator LD. The dimensions of the finished product are stored numerically.
