Abstract

1401353 Paper CALGON CORP 2 Oct 1972 [6 Oct 1971] 45428/72 Heading D2B A water-soluble polymer containing at least 2.5 mole% 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof is used as a drainage and filler retention aid in paper manufacture. The polymer may be prepared by copolymerising 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulphonic acid with one or more of the following monomers - acrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylamide, methacrylic acid, N- lower alkyl substituted acrylamides and methacrylamides, alkali metal styrene sulphonates, N-vinyl pyrrolidine, di lower alkyl diallyl ammonium chlorides, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, lower alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid, styrene, and diacetone diacrylamide. Rosin size and alum may be added to the pulp furnish. The filler may be clay or TiO 2 . Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1355289.
