Abstract

1401232 Connecting filter elements together PALL CORP 17 Aug 1972 [17 Sept 1971] 18468/74 Divided out of 1401231 Heading B1D Two or more tubular filter elements with plastics end caps are joined end to end by softening axially outer parts of the end caps, by applying solvent or by heating with a flame or radiant heat, and pressing the end caps together and allowing them to harden to form an integral unit. Softening is localised, being for example limited to headings 20, 21 so that inner parts of the end caps in which the ends of the filter medium are embedded remain hard. The process allows long filter element arrays to be built up using filter medium which can be made only in small sheets. The filter medium described comprises potassium polytitanate fibres (higher than dititanate) of less than 0.5 Á dia. and a length to diameter ratio of 5:1 to 300:1, applied to a supporting sheet on a paper-making machine to form a layer with a maximum pore diameter of 1.2 Á. The supporting sheet may comprise a coarser fibrous layer deposited on a reticulate substrate. Two sheets of the resulting laminate could be joined together with the fine layers innermost. The elements illustrated comprise pleated sheet filter medium enclosed between a grooved perforate polypropylene inner tube 14 and an outer tube of polypropylene netting 13, which can be shrunk into place. Polypropylene end caps are joined to tubes 13, 14 and to the filter medium. When forming the filter sheet into a tube, abutting edges can be joined by softening a resin binder in the fibrous layers or by applying adhesive, the adhesive including fibres similar to those of the layers. When joining elements together they can be located on a common mandrel or in a common cage until the end caps harden.
