Abstract
1401162 Centrifuge bowl discharge arrangement PENNWALT CORP 17 April 1973 [31 May 1972] 18379/73 Heading B2P Heavy phase material separated within a separation chamber 75 of a centrifuge bowl 18 is discharged through an opening 16 which extends through the wall of the bowl and is fitted with a nozzle assembly 10 including a retainer sleeve 11 slidably mounted within the opening, means 50, 78 for holding the sleeve in a predetermined angular position and means 22, 26 to limit sliding of the sleeve outwardly of the bowl, a nozzle holder 12 having a portion 40 of circular cross-section which is slidably mounted within the inner portion 42 of the interior of the sleeve, means 36, 38 for locking the holder against axial movement with respect to the sleeve by rotating the holder in one direction after its portion 40 has been pushed inwardly to a predetermined position within the sleeve inner portion 42, and means 46, 48 for stopping the rotation of the holder in the said one direction at a predetermined point at which the holder is in a fully-locked position. The sleeve 11 is pushed into the opening 16 from the interior of the bowl until a shoulder 22 on its outer periphery abuts a shoulder 26 formed in the opening and it is keyed into place by a key 50 extending through it into a groove 78 formed in the wall of the bowl 18. The holder 12 is pushed into the sleeve from the exterior of the bowl and is locked into place (by rotation) by a bayonet-type connection formed by a lug 38 on the holder engaging into a channel 36 in the sleeve. In the fully-locked position of the holder the end 46 of lug 38 abuts the side 48 of the key 50. To unlock the holder and remove it from the sleeve, it is rotated in the opposite direction, rotating lug 38 out of channel 36 until the other end 52 of lug 38 abuts the other side of lug 50. The holder is then in its fully unlocked position and can be pulled from the sleeve. The holder may be rotated by a tool engaging a slot 56 in the outer end of the holder, the slot being also arranged to provide visual indication of when the holder is in its fully locked position. A nozzle 14 includes an abrasion-resistant insert (68), Fig. 5 (not shown), secured, e.g. by glue, within a flanged outer casing (76) which is threadably mounted in the holder 12. When the holder is in its fully-locked position the nozzle is disposed in such a position as to discharge material in a predetermined direction with respect to the bowl. A boss 58, which may be associated with a sealing ring 62, is provided on the holder 12 to guide and support the holder within the sleeve 11 and also to shield the interior of the sleeve from material being discharged through nozzle 14. Sealing rings 28, 43 and (74) are mounted between the bowl and the sleeve between the sleeve and the holder, and between the holder and the flanged portion of the nozzle outer casing (70). A number of discharge openings provided with nozzle assemblies are arranged around the bowl.
