Abstract

1401055 Washing machines PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 21 June 1972 [24 June 1971] 29031/72 Heading D1A [Also in Division F4] The flow of water or other balancing material to balance compartments 22 of a washing machine drum 1 is controlled by a first member 37 which is supported by the frame 12 to be capable of performing an oscillating controlling movement independently of but in response to movements of the imbalanced drum 1, the member cooperating with a second member 44, one of said members being located in the flow path of at least some of the balancing material. The washing machine Fig. 2, comprises bearings 5, 6 mounted in plates 11, 12 and supporting a polypropylene tub 2 and shafts 7, 8 of the drum 1 which is perforated circumferentially between the compartments 22. Two support rollers (15) (Fig. 1, not shown) have eccentric axes to resist sideways movement of the machine. The first member comprises a block 37 on a flexible strip 35 with a water passage 38/39 through which water passes during a period controlled by the timer or programmer preferably when the drum is rotating at from 200 to 300 r.p.m. between the washing rate of 50 r.p.m. and the spinning rate of 700 to 1000 r.p.m. and the second member comprises an edge 44 of a bracket 43. When the drum is unbalanced, the frame rocks and water passes through the passage 38/39. and alternately past the edge 44 and into an opening 30 of a passage 29 leading to a compartment 22 and against the edge 44 until the drum is balanced. In alternative arrangements the flexible strip (45) is horizontal and has a passage (48) cooperating with an edge (50) (Fig. 3, not shown), the first member (51) is pivoted at the top and has a spout (53) (Fig. 4, not shown), the block (62) is mounted at the bottom of a flexible strip (60) having no passage adjacent the end of a water supply tube (64) (Fig. 5 not shown). In Figs. 6, 7 the first element is a ball or roller 72 co-operable with co-axial water inlet and outlet tubes 67, 68, a drain tube 69 being provided for water obstructed by the ball or roller. In a further embodiment, Figs. 8, 9 water from a supply pipe 73 flows alternately through pipes 74, 75 under the control of two spring- centralized first members 79 with apertures 80 to control the flow of jets from inlets 77 through control pipes 78 to the pipe 73.
