1400868 Soldering KUO WEI-CHENG 5 Oct 1972 45850/72 Heading B3R An electric soldering iron has a housing 1 containing a spool 4 carrying solder wire 3, the housing also forming a hand-grip 2, guide means 4 for leading solder wire from the spool to the bit 10 of the iron and feed means supported within the housing for feeding solder wire from the spool through the guide means, the feed means including a manually rotatable wheel 5 which projects through an aperture in the housing so that the operator may turn it with the finger or thumb of the hand which holds the hand-grip, the manually rotatable wheel being coaxial and rotatable with one of a pair of intermeshing corrugated or toothed wheels 6, 7 between which the solder wire is passed. A tubular casing 15 is secured to the finger or thumb of the housing 1 a block 13 of heat conductive material carrying a copper bit 10 and heated by an element 12 being mounted within the casing. The solder wire 3 which may be flux cored is fed through a guide tube 9 to the bit 10 by the two toothed wheels 6, 7, the wheel 7 being spring urged against the wheel 6 which is fixed to and rotated by the wheel 5 with a corrugated edge projecting out of the handle 2, the wheels 5, 6 being mounted on a shaft 16. Both wheels are grooved at 6<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>1</SP> to receive the solder wire. In a modification the bit is replaced by a rod bent to hairpin form and connected to a transformer, housed in the upper part of the housing, a lamp indicating when the transformer is energized. In further embodiments the irons above described are modified and each is provided with an electric motor in the housing which is arranged to drive the shaft 16 when a switch is closed so that the solder wire may be fed by the motor or manually by rotating the wheel 5. In the iron having the hairpin shaped bit the spool is arranged in the housing above the handgrip with the motor in the hand-grip.
