Abstract
1400449 Automatic electric control LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 44358/71 Heading G3N [Also in Division B7] An aircraft 10 has lift control surfaces 11 on its wings operated by transmission shafts 15, 16 driven by a motor 19, generators 23, 25 producing first electrical signals dependent on the driven positions of the shafts 15, 16, generators 24, 26 coacting with the shafts and responsive to the signals from the generators 25, 23 to produce second electrical signals dependent on a difference between the driven positions of the shafts, and switch means (66), (64), Fig. 2 (not shown) responsive to the second electrical signals and governing control apparatus 21 for the motor to arrest the transmission shafts when both switch means are operated. Thus if there is a difference in driven position between the shafts, relays (A), (B) in the switch means (64), (66) are both deenergized so that both of two parallel connections to the control apparatus are broken, stopping rotation of the shafts, and warning lamps 75, 74 are lit; but if, because of a component failure only one of the relays is de-energized, then a warning lamp is lit but one of the parallel connections to the control apparatus remains. The aircraft also has slats 12 operated by shafts 17, 18 driven by a motor 20 controlled by apparatus 22, and shafts 17, 18 are monitored in the same way as shafts 15, 16 so that relays (C), (D) are both de-energized if their driven positions differ. The arrangement is such that a difference in position between the shafts 15 and 16 or between the shafts 17 and 18 stops both motors 19 and 20, but if it is the slat transmissions shafts 17, 18 which are at fault, then operation of over-ride control 72 causes the contacts of relays (C), (D) to be short-circuited so that the flaps 11 are still operated. The control apparatus 21, 22 may be electro-hydraulic actuation systems as described in co-pending application 46626/71.
