Abstract

1400317 Counting apparatus J F PREECE 25 Sept 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 47896/73 Heading G4D In a system for dealing with medical prescriptions a machine readable record is made of details of the substance dispensed and the number of pills, capsules &c. thereof dispensed. A large pack of the pills, &c. is tipped into a counting machine 11, which may be of the kind comprising a hopper from which pills fall down several channels past photo-electric detectors, which counts out at 13 a desired number of pills set at 18 and indicated at 19. The pack is placed in an optical reader 14 which reads off bar coded information on the pack defining the nature, strength and quantity of the substance therein. After counting out the desired number of pills the machine feeds the rest of them back into the pack by 13<SP>1</SP>. A cassette data recorder 17 receives signals from the counter 11 and reader 14 and records the details of the substance and the amount dispensed. In addition the reader 14 may be presented with the prescription form and the recorder 17 then also records a serial number, details of the prescribing doctor and of the patient, the identity of the pharmacist and the Area Health Authority and so on. The recorded cassette is later examined by a computer which automatically supplies an order to the wholesalers t'o replenish the pharmacy and information to the National Health Service pricing bureau.
