Abstract

1399614 Separating solids CANADIAN INDUSTRIES LTD 8 June 1973 [12 June 1972] 27251/72 Heading B2H Hydrophobic solid particles are separated from other solid particles in a mixture of the solid particles by (1) preparing an aqueous suspension of the mixture of the particles, (2) adding a hydrophobic liquid to the aqueous suspension; (3) contacting the aqueous suspension containing the hydrophobic liquid with a hydrophobic solid substrate that is wetted by said liquid so that the hydrophobic particles adhere to the liquid on the surface of the solid substrate; (4) removing the hydrophobic liquid holding the hyrophobic particles from the surface of the solid substrate and (5) recovering the hydrophobic particles. The solids, e.g. ore particles (examples of which are given) to be separated may be inherently hydrophobic or can be made hydrophobic, e.g. through absorption of a surface conditioner, or, e.g. in the case of oxidised ore particles, by sulphidisation with a water soluble sulphide. The surface conditioner may be .a flotation agent selected from xanthates, thiocarbonates, thiophosphates, long chain aliphatic acids and aliphatic amines. The solid substrate employed may be in the form of films, fibres, filaments, helices, pellets, discs or cores made of polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate or a polyamide (examples of which are given). Alternatively the substrate may consists of metal or ceramic particulates. The hydrophobic liquid may be an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. fuel oil, petroleum ether, benzene, nitrobenzene, toluene or xylene. The hydrophobic particles may be removed from the liquid covered substrate by the use of mechanical means; by treating the substrate with steam to volatilise the liquid and flush off the particles; by treating the substrate with a surface active agent; or by washing the substrate with a solvent (e.g. methanol) for the liquid. In an illustrated embodiment the suspension of particles to be separated and to which hydrophobic liquid has been added is passed through a column which is packed with poly-, mer fibres and/or helices. A number of columns may 'be 'arranged in parallel.
