Abstract

1399587 Laminates IDEMITSU KOSAN CO Ltd and NIPPON HIGH PACK CO Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [19 Sept 1972] 43982/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A laminate comprises a layer of a composition comprising foamed ethylene-polymer resinous material, e.g. polyethylene, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers and blends thereof, and at least 30% of the total weight of the composition, of an inorganic calcium-containing compound, e.g. calcium sulphate, sulphite, carbonate, silicate or hydroxide, and resin-impregnated paper bonded to at least one surface thereof. The calcium compound may be present in the form of a powder of particle size less than 10Á. The foamed ethylene polymer may be produced in a mould using as foaming agent azodicarbonamide, diphenylsulphone-3,31-disulphohydrazide or benzyl sulphonio acid-diphenyl hydrazide, and as cross-linking agent an organic peroxide, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, di-tertiary butyl peroxide or 1,3-bis-(tertiary butyl peroxy isopropyl) benzene, and then cut into sheets of the desired thickness. The surface of the layer of foamed material may then be heated to 60- 70‹ C. and pressed on to the resin-impregnated paper. Alternatively the layers may be bonded together using an adhesive. The laminate may be used in the production of furniture, boxes, partition boards and packing materials.
