Abstract

1399582 Hand tool handles NUPLA CORP 3 July 1973 31580/73 Heading B4K An adapter for use in fixing a tool head 16 to a fibreglass tool handle 10 comprises a plurality of component parts, e.g. 12, 13, having an externally tapered surface portion 12c, 13c conforming to the taper of part of a double tapered opening 17 in the tool head, the adapter parts being made of an elastically and plastically deformable material and having locking means for preventing relative longitudinal movement with respect to the handle. To mount the tool head the handle is passed through the opening 17, the adapter fitted to the end of the handle and together the handle and adapter pressed back into the opening, the adapter expanding into the lower tapered part 17b of the opening to form a locking engagement with the tool head. Both parts 12, 13 of the adapter have locking projections 14, 15 which are received in recesses 11 in the handle 10. The adapter may be of nylon reinforced with glass or of mouldable thermoplastics material such as polyurethane, polycarbonate or ABS. Each adapter part is supplied with three flat removable spacer inserts 20 which provide for minor variations in the handle sizes and tool head openings and a moulded insert (40, Fig. 7, not shown) intended to provide for larger size variations. The inserts 20 may be of materials such as fibre, vinyl, fibreglass, phenolic sheet or insulating type fish paper. The inserts (40) are preferably of the same material as the adapter parts 12, 13.
