Abstract
1399149 Blasting CARBORUNDUM CO 11 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 57115/72 Heading B3D [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for cleaning the interior of a pipe 11 or tubular object comprises means 13 for rotating the pipe, abrasive blasting means 29 for discharging abrasive particles against the interior of the pipe, means 53 for collecting used abrasive particles mounted adjacent the blasting means, and means 67 for conveying the particles from the collecting means to the blasting means. The pipe is supported for rotation on rollers 13 and at each end of the pipe is a unit 15, 16, each associated with a respective working unit 17 for collecting spent abrasive from and for recharging its working unit. Each unit 15, 16 has a hopper 18 for the spent abrasive connected by an elevator 21 to a separator 23 and storage hopper 25. The ends of the pipe are received in seals 27 of the units 15, 16 and each working unit 17 is connected by a boom 33 to a car 35 or hydraulic boom for moving its unit 17 along the pipe. One unit 17 may start at one end of the pipe and travel towards the centre, and the other start at the centre and move towards the other end so that both units travel in the same direction. Each unit 17 consists of a number of circular plates 37 spaced apart by members 39 and forming compartments 41, 42, and the unit is supported by rollers 49 within the pipe to permit rotation of the pipe and longitudinal movement of the unit. The compartment 41 contains a pair of blasting wheels 29 rotated in opposite directions to throw abrasion particles downwardly into the pipe surface. The com partment 42 collects the used abrasive and contains an endless belt 53 having cleats 57 on its surface and driven over rollers 59 so as to be closely spaced adjacent the interior of the pipe and move at approximately the same speed as the pipe to carry the spent abrasive from the bottom of the pipe and deposit it in a trough 65. One of the rollers 59 is driven by a chain 63 from a motor 61 which is also connected by a chain 69 to a screw conveyer 67 in the trough 65 for carrying the collected abrasive to the blasting wheels. The rollers 59 for the belt 53 may be mounted on a pair of pivoted plates and a pneumatic cylinder pivots the plates to withdraw the belts from the pipe surfaces during retraction of the unit from the pipe. Further compartments 71, 72 store ballast or supplementary abrasive.
