Abstract

1398973 Chucks JACOBS MFG CO Ltd 11 July 1972 [21 July 1971] 34254/71 Heading B3B A drill chuck comprises a body part 10 in which jaws 16 are slidably mounted in respective guides 14, a nut 20 rotatably mounted in a groove 18 in the body and having a tapered screw thread engagement with the jaws, and a driving sleeve 34 non-rtatably connected to said nut 20 and including means 30, 32 whereby the chuck can be secured to a power tool driving spindle, the arrangement being such that torque applied to the chuck from the power tool spindle tends to rotate the nut relative to the body to tighten the jaws on a drill shank. The nut 20 is formed in two halves and held in the groove 18 by driving sleeve 34. A gear element 24 for a chuck key may be formed separately or integrally with the nut 20. The spindle securing means 30, 32 may comprise an adaptor 30, or internal or external threads 32 formed on a spigot part of the driving sleeve 34. A steel ball 38 takes axial thrust, and provides a self centring action. The sleeve 34 may be a metal pressing with strengthening corrugations formed therein, or may be made from plastics material with a metal reinforcing band around the nut 20 or gear element 24, to which it may be attached by an adhesive.
