Abstract

1398661 Waste water treatment HITACHI Ltd 24 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972 6 Oct 1972] 40317/73 Heading C1C Material having a cationic or anionic charge is removed from waste water by contacting the waste water with plant cells at a pH exceeding the isoelectric point of the plant cells when the material to be removed is cationic or at a pH not exceeding the isoelectric point of the plant cells when the material is anionic so as to adsorb the material on the plant cells and separating the plant cells. The pH of the waste water may be adjusted before contacting with the cells or the pH of the mixture may be adjusted after contacting. The cationic material removed may be a heavy metal, such as Mn, Ni, Ag, Cd, Hg or Pb and the anionic material removed may be an acid dye, a mordant dye or hexavalent chromium. The plant cells may be obtained from yeasts, green algae and permanent tissues of seed plants. Where the waste water contains both cationic and anionic material the water may first be contacted with plant cells at a pH exceeding their isoelectric point and then be contacted with plant cells (which may be the same as or different from the first plant cells) at a pH not exceeding their isoelectric point. Where hexavalent chromium is to be removed the waste water may first be contacted with plant cells at a pH not exceeding their isoelectric point and then be contacted with plant cells at a pH exceeding their isoelectric point to remove chromium which has been converted to Cr<SP>3+</SP> on contact with the plant cells. The plant cells may be separated from the waste water by centrifugation and/or by using a precipitation tube.
