Abstract

1398408 Laminates CROWN ZELLERBACH INTERNATIONAL Inc 2 June 1972 [3 June 1971] 25933/72 Heading B5N A biaxially oriented laminate, suitable for use in the manufacture of bags, is produced by thermally consolidating a non-woven web formed of thermoplastic polymer fibres to form a film, stretching the film in one direction to uniaxially orient it, cross-folding the film along at least one fold line into a multilayered structure so that the direction of orientation of one layer is at a cross angle to the direction of orientation of the adjacent layer(s) and adhering the layers together by heat-sealing or by an adhesive. The fibres may be produced by melt spinning or solution spinning and cut into staple fibres, or in the case of ultra-high molecular weight polyolefins by precipitating from a solution thereof, and may be made into a non- woven web on a paper machine. The non-woven web may be consolidated by use of a heated roll completely to the extent that the fibrous material is no longer recognizable or incompletely so that the film retains a porous character. The film may be longitudinally stretched, preferably while heating, to the extent of 2-8 times its original length to produce a film of thickness 0À5-20 mils. The uniaxially oriented film may then be spirally wound and flattened or folded zig-zaggedly and the layers adhered together to produce the biaxially oriented laminate.
