Abstract

1398183 Printed circuit board edge connectors PLESSEY CO Ltd 23 May 1973 [15 June 1972] 27945/72 Heading H2E An electrical edge connector having a body 11 of insulating material comprises a rear portion 12 from which extends forwardly two parallel walls 13, 14 defining a circuit board receiving space 16, the rear portion 12 pierced by (a) closed passage(s) 19 extending from the back 17 to the front 15 and continuing along wall 13 to the connector front F as a passage 20 open horizontally towards the other wall 14, and accommodating a raised seating 25 with a rear latching surface 27 occupying part of the height of the passage 20, the closed passage 19 having two grooves 23 from the back 17 to the front 15 on the inner side of 19, a contact 29 with resilient bowed contact portion 31 joined to a rigid support portion 30 engaging the inner surface 22 of the closed passage 19 and the seating 25 of the open passage 20, inwardly extending fins 34, which enter grooves 23 and terminate in lugs 35, which abut the front 15 as a tang 36 projecting outwardly engages latching surface 27. The connector construction may be modular, each module comprising a pair of passages, one in each wall. There may be two equal seatings 25 with ramps 28 in passage 20 with between them corridor 26 (Fig. 1, not shown), in which is a tang 36 located centrally on the contact 29. The passage 20 is partly closed by strips 24, which may be engaged by a transverse bar on bowed contact portion 31, which may have a gold plated contact area 37. The contacts may be pitched at 2À5 mm. or less and the body may be made as strip from which lengths may be cut. Preferably 31 has an arcuate cross-section at the contact area 37. The insertion of the contacts from the front is described. Removal is obtained by flattening the tang with a tool poked through passage 19 or corridor (26).
