Abstract
1398054 Welding by pressure GEORG FISCHER AG 24 Jan 1973 [9 Feb 1972] 3519/73 Heading B3R In explosively bonding a metal plate 29 to a surface or surfaces of a metal workpiece or workpieces 41 the plate 29 (the first plate) is supported in an aperture in a second plate 28, explosive material 19 is placed on one side of the two plates to extend over both plates and with the plates arranged over the workpiece or workpieces with the first plate 29 parallel to the surface or surfaces of the workpiece or workpieces the explosive material is detonated to cause the first plate 29 to separate from the second and impact against the surface or surfaces of the workpiece or workpieces. Two iron strips 41 to be welded are held together in a holder 43 and positioned upright in a slot 6 in the base 3 of a foam plastics container 1. A plate assembly 26 formed of a central elongated plate 29 surrounded by an outer plate 28 forms the base of a container 16 for explosive 19, the container 16 being held in the container 1 by supports 23 with the assembly 26 above the strips 41. The plate 29 is wider than the total width of the upper surface of the strips 41. A heavy granular material 50 is provided in the container 1 to surround the containers 16 and tube 7 is provided to support the detonator for the charge 19. When the explosive is detonated the plate 29 is hurled from the aperture in the plate 28 and is welded to the edges of the strips 41. A cable end with or without a shoe may be held securely to a rail using a bonding plate similar to that used in the construction of Figs. 1 and 2 which becomes welded to the rail on each side of the cable end. Flat metal sections, earthing strips and bus-bars may be bonded by the method of the invention.
