Abstract
1396919 Bumpers NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 5 Oct 1972 [4 Nov 1971] 45917/72 Heading B7J [Also in Division F2] A vehicle bumper of the cross-section shown is mounted on a spring unit comprising a helically wound volute compression spring 32 having axially overlapping turns, first and second spring containment elements 34, 42 bearing on opposite ends of the spring, and connecting means 54 extending through the spring to link the containment elements and limit the distance they can move apart while allowing them to move towards each other. The spring 32 is always under compression, even in the position of maximum separation shown. On impact the spring 32 is further compressed, the rod 54 moving into a space in the vehicle frame. Since the rod 54 limits extension of the unit, the bumper may be used for towing.
