Abstract

1396775 Jointing PRECISION SCREW & MFG CO Ltd 12 Jan 1973 [8 Feb 1972] 5680/72 Heading B3U Apparatus for installing a screwthreaded insert into plastics material 30 comprises a heatable tip 28 for mounting an insert, a lever 20 for displacing the tip and mechanism for feeding the inserts from a supply. The tool may comprise an electrically heated tip 28 on which an insert may be located, the tip, which may be thermostatically controlled, being connected to a transformer and other control gear in a head 14. A lever 20 moves the head 14 on a post 12 against a return spring 18 until a pin 22 on the lever moves out of a lateral slot 24 in the head into an axial slot 26 which permits automatic return of the head by the spring. Inserts may be supplied, through inclined guides and a gate mechanism, from a vibrating bowl and are retained on the tip 28 for a time of the order of 3 seconds. The inserts may be pressed into pilot holes in the plastics. The apparatus may be adapted for angular movement, under the control of stops, between a pick-up station, a heating station and an installation station, so that a number of inserts may be inserted in a workpiece.
