Abstract
1396538 Controlling extruded tube wall thickness INDUSTRIELE ONDERNEMING WAVIN NV 11 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 32432/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division G3] The wall thickness of an extruded plastics tube is controlled by selectively switching auxiliary heaters around the circumference of the extruder head in response to devices which sense the thickness at corresponding points around the tube. The sensors 10 comprise twelve equally spaced switches, each consisting of a flat metal plate guided in a plastics support and urged outwards against the extruded tube within a sizing die 9 by an air filled "balloon". Each plate has projections at both ends which complete a circuit through "fixed contacts" when the thickness is a desired minimum. Short term fluctuations are ignored because these influence the contacts at one end only of each plate at a time. The heaters are in the form of plugs 26 in the extruder casing 3 and/or wires embedded in slots in both the casing and the core 2, and each is turned off (by a relay) when its corresponding switch is opened. Opening of a switch also causes cooling air to pass through a corresponding channel 30 for a finite time, e.g. 10 seconds, determined by a single timer. This arrangement is to eliminate eccentricity, which results in a number of switches being opened in sequence; the single timer shuts all the air ducts off together and thus the sector whose switch opened first receives cooling air for the longest time. Four switches at 90 degrees to each other also control a motor drive (Fig. 8, not shown) which draws the extruded tube. Initially, this drive gradually decelerates, causing thickening of the tube wall; when this is detected by simultaneous opening of the four spaced switches a servomotor causes the drive to gradually accelerate until the four switches again close and the cycle is repeated.
