Abstract

1396416 Control of several D.C. motors W HOUSTON 26 July 1972 34906/72 Heading H2D In a self-propelled vehicle for which motive power is provided by, for each side of the vehicle, at least one electric drive motor 1, 3, 5, 7 (as shown). In the driving condition, steering of the vehicle is effected by varying the power supplied to the motor(s) on one side relative to the amount of power supplied to the motor(s) on the other side. In the braking condition, when the motors act as generators and feed power back to the power source (battery), a control means including unidirectional switches 19 effects steering by interrupting the passage of current generated by the motor(s) on both sides of the vehicle and varying the duration of the periods of interruption in respect of the motor(s) on one side relative to the duration of those periods on the other. The motors (series wound, D.C.) have similar control circuits 9, 10, 11, 12 respectively. Gauged steering potentiometers 29, 30 act during driving and braking respectively. Circuit 9 for example, which controls motor 1, comprises a comparator 13, a unidirectional switch 15 to control power supplied from a D.C. source 16, an integrator 17 which integrates the motor back-e.m.f. During driving, comparator 13 emits square wave pulses to close switch 15 only when the amplitude of a saw-tooth signal from a generator 21 exceeds that of the integrator output. The saw-tooth amplitude is controlled by a speed selector 28 and a speed pot 22. If the motor load increases the back-e.m.f. will decrease and thus the width of the current pulses will be increased. A steering potentiometer controls the ratio of the amplitudes of the sawtooth signals fed to the left-hand side and right hand side control circuits. During braking, energy is returned to the power source 16 via unidirectional switches 19 controlled by square pulses from comparators 31, 32, respectively associated with the left and right side drive motors. The relative braking is determined by steering pot 30 connected to the comparators 31, 32 whereby to effect relative control of the periods of interruption of reactive current fed back via switches 19.
