Abstract

1396284 Secondary radar systems ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 June 1972 [18 June 1971] 28760/71 Heading H4D In a radar monitoring system for determining the range of craft, each has a radar responder which is energized by a radio transmission unique to that responder, the radio transmissions being completely separate from the radar transmissions. In a surveillance area, e.g. canal leading to dock area, interrogation stations are situated at 4-5 mile intervals. Each ship entering the canal is issued with a radar beacon including a UHF radio receiver and X-band radar receiver-transmitter. Each beacon has a unique two-tone audio coding which is decoded by the UHF receiver to energize the radar receiver-transmitter. This comprises an X-band receiving-transmitting aerial and a delay line canceller to detect the primary radar pulse pairs. 64 Ásec. after reception of a pulse pair, a single reply pulse is transmitted at a slightly different frequency to the interrogation pulses. The system includes a central control station which transmits one UHF code every 1À5 sees. The interrogating station, Fig. 2, receives this at antenna 17 and retransmits the code at a different frequency via up- and downstream aerials 7, 8. Each code is detected and used to trigger a generator 13 which enables sequentially pre-amplifiers 14 connected to up- and downstream radar antennae 1, 2. Generator 13 also triggers transmitter 5 to radiate several hundred primary radar pulse pairs per code. Each transmitted pair resets counter 26 to zero after a 64 Ásec. delay 25. Reply signals pass threshold 28 and gate 20 and read the range measurement into decoder 27 which sets the measurement into one of twenty range cells 19 each of which comprises a counter. At the end of a complete code cycle counters 19 thus contain a distribution of ranges. After a delay 24 unique to each interrogator, selection logic 16 analyses the distribution to pass the most likely range to generator 25, which adds a digit representing up- or downstream, an interrogator identifying code and a parity check digit. This signal is then relayed via the UHF aerial 17 to the control station. Delay 24 ensures that each interrogator replies in the correct order.
