Abstract

1395904 Distance measuring apparatus SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 July 1972 [30 April 1971] 12305/71 Heading G1M Distance measuring apparatus comprises a spring steel strip 14, Figs. 1 and 3, fastened by screws 27 to a plate 25 spring adjustable on a further plate 24 mounted on the movable part of a machine tool e.g. a lathe saddle. A support surface 11, over which the distance measuring apparatus moves, is engaged by a roller 10 mounted on the shaft 12 of a transducer 13 and is pressed there-against by the strip 14 which adjusts the pressure of the roller, and the axis of the roller may be positioned to extend at right angles to the surface 11 by mounting the transducer 13 and roller shaft 12 on a plate 15 carried by the strip 14, which plate 15 may pivot about a screw 17 and be adjusted relative to the strip 14 by turning a screw 19 mounting a cam (21), Fig.2 (not shown). The roller 10, Figs. 4 and 5, comprises tubes, 33, 34 of tool steel and a middle tube 35, 36 of mild steel or brass which allows the roller to deform radially under pressure from the strip 14 and thus reduce its effective diameter and measurement error due to metal gathering.
