A pawl 5 mounted on a pivoted arm 6 prevents downward movement when in its lowermost position, and the entry of a cow's neck 9 raises the arm 6 by pulling a rope 7 thus enabling the yoke to move freely on the support thus preventing escape. The pawl 5 and arm 6 may be mounted at the top of the yoke so that the neck of a cow raises the arm and frees the pawl, and when a tubular support is used a recess in its upper region is provided for engagement by the pawl. The yokes can be raised by a cable 12 connected between the top of the yoke and a rotatable shaft so that all the yokes can be raised simultaneously, or alternatively the cables are connected to a common pull bar or cable. The cable 12 may be connected directly to the pawl raising it against the tubular support when the yoke is lifted until it engages the recess. Gates extending each side of an upstanding pivot are provided between adjacent yokes, the gates having arms connected to a control rod whereby when closed they extend between the yokes and when open they allow access by cattle to stalls between the pivot and the adjacent yoke.
