Abstract

1395894 Welding by fusion SKF (UK) Ltd 19 May 1972 [21 May 1971] 16432/71 Heading B3R [Also in Division F2] In electron or laser beam welding together of two parts 27, 28 of a motor vehicle wheel hub ball bearing assembly, at cylindrical mating surfaces thereof, the beam penetrates the mating surfaces to provide a weld 35, and debris forced from between the mating surfaces by the beam is trapped in a chamber 40 which is remote from the beam source and is formed, at least in part, by the parts 27, 28. The bearing assembly comprises two rows of balls 15, 16 engaging races supported on or, as shown, formed on an outer member 14 and the parts 27, 28. As shown, the mating surfaces are formed on a spigot 31 of the part 27 and is a socket portion 33 of the part 28. The chamber 40 is provided by co-operation of a shoulder 41 of the part 27 and an overlying lip 42 of the part 28. The spigot 31 and the socket 33 fit together with a light interference. If desired, the bearing may be axially pre-loaded by application of a force between the parts 27, 28 after taking up ball/track clearance. Welding is effected by rotation of an electron or laser beam about the bearing assembly axis. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the spigot and socket portion 31, 33 are respectively disposed on the parts 28, 27. In Fig. 2 (not shown), instead of the lip 42, the chamber 40 is closed by a metal band (46) supported radially on the shoulder 41 and axially abutting the adjacent end wall (45) of the socket portion 33. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the band is additionally supported radially on a small ledge (47) of the socket portion 33. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the band is further additionally supported axially by a shouldered seating 48 on the shoulder 41 and this arrangement provides for use of the band as an axial spacer for pre-setting ball clearance or preload. The band may be an interference fit, or where the prevailing debris particle size is comparatively large, a clearance fit on the shoulder 41 and ledge (47). The band may be formed with one or more circular corrugations allowing axial band flexure to accommodate variation in axial length between the shoulder 41 and the end wall (45).
