Abstract
1395160 2,2,5,5 - Tetramethyl - 4 - hdyroxyaryl-piperidine derivatives CIBA-GEIGY AG 30 Nov 1972 [30 Nov 1971 14 July 1972] 55305/72 and 55306/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds (I) and salts thereof, where X is a group (II) or (III), wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are the same or different and each is hydrogen, a straight or branched-chain alkyl residue having from 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl residue having from 5 to 14 carbon atoms, an aralkyl residue having from 7 to 14 carbon atoms, or an aryl or alkaryl residue having from 6 to 14 carbon atoms, Y is hydrogen, O, a straight- or branched-chain alkyl residue having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, an alkenyl or alkynyl residue having from 3 to 12 carbon atoms or an aralkyl residue having from 7 to 12 carbon atoms and Z is hydrogen, an alkyl or substituted alkyl residue having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkenyl or alkynyl residue having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloaliphatic residue having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, an araliphatic residue having from 7 to 12 carbon atoms, an aromatic residue having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms or a heterocyclic residue, or the group -COZ 1 , where Z 1 is hydrogen, alkyl or substituted alkyl having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkenyl or alkynyl residue having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloaliphatic residue having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, an araliphatic residue having from 7 to 12 carbon atoms, an aromatic residue having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms, a heterocyclic residue or a group having the formula -NR 5 R 6 wherein R 5 is hydrogen or an alkyl residue having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R 6 is hydrogen, an aliphatic residue having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloaliphatic residue having from 5 to 12 carbon atoms or an aromatic residue having from 6 to 12 carbon atoms and their preparation by hydrogenating a compound (IV), where X and Y are as above but Y cannot be O or alkenyl or alkynyl, by oxidizing a compound (I) where Y is H or by reacting a compound (I) where Y is H with an alkylating, alkenylating, aralkylating or alkynylating. The compounds stabilize polymeric material, e.g. polypropylene against the action of U.V. radiation and heat.
