Abstract

1395158 Supply circuits for AC loads; protecting AC motors RCA CORPORATION 31 Aug 1972 [16 Sept 1971] 423261/71 Headings H2H and H2J A circuit for controlling the power supplied to a load 20 such as a universal motor from an A.C. source comprises a triac 10, a first triggering circuit for providing a triggering signal to the gate electrode of the triac when the source voltage is below a given level and a second triggering circuit for providing a triggering signal to the gate when the source voltage is above the given level. If the load is a 110 volt motor and a 110 volt A.C. supply is connected to terminals A, B, a first R.C. circuit 32, 34 triggers the triac 10 via resistors 40, 42 and a diode 44. However, if a 220 volt A.C. supply is connected across the terminals A, B, a zener diode 52 breaks down to switch on a transistor 50 thereby preventing triggering of the triac by the first R.C. circuit but enabling a second R.C. circuit 62, 64 to provide phase delayed triggering pulses to the triac via a diac 15 so that only 110 volts R.M.S. are supplied to the motor. A modified circuit is described which prevents momentary triggering of the triac by the first R.C. circuit as the capacitor 34 initially charges when the higher voltage is applied to the terminals A, B.
