Abstract

1395041 Magnetic discs BURROUGHS CORP 24 April 1972 [6 May 1971] 18874/72 Heading G5R A disc record 10 comprises a base 14, a magnetic layer 15, and a wax layer 16, the wax having a melting point which is slightly above the general operating temperature of the disc; if, therefore, a pneumatically supported head (11, Fig. 1, not shown), should unexpectedly drop on to the record during operation, the local temperature will rise, some of the wax will melt, and the head will "skate" on a liquid wax film. No permanent damage will thus be caused, and when the local temperature drops the liquid re-solidifies. Various waxes and thicknesses thereof are specified. The layer 16 may be formed by spraying on to layer 15 a solution of the appropriate wax in a volatile liquid.
