Abstract

1394565 Handling rod assembly for supporting investment casting pattern CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 9 Jan 1974 [15 Jan 1973] 01029/74 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A wax pattern 12 is supported by a wax or aluminium cuff 13 on a vertically arranged handling rod 21 attached at its upper end 22 to handling equipment for investment casting a ceramic shell mould (e.g. of a crank-shaft for a fuel injection pump) on the pattern 12. The cuff 13 embeds the head 15 of a lug 14 attached by bayonet slots 18 and a press fit pin 31 to the lower end of rod 21. This attachment prevents movement of the lug 14 axially of the rod 21 during casting. Relative rotation between the lug 14 and the rod 21 during casting is prevented by co-operation between a lug projection 20 and a slot 36 in a sleeve 32 that slides over the rod 21. Sleeve rotation is prevented by a press fit pin 29, and limited axial movement is allowed by a sleeve slot 33 engaging pin 29; the sleeve is movable axially against a compression spring 34.
