Abstract
1394493 Cutting and welding by fusion MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 11 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 17386/73 Headings B3V and B3R [Also in Divisions G3 and H1] An apparatus for welding or cutting workpieces 16 using a laser beam comprises a device for moving the laser beam along a predetermined path and an adjusting device associated with the moving device for adjusting the speed of advance of the laser beam in dependence on the change of direction of the path being followed and for varying the energy of the laser beam in dependence on its output signals. The lasers are mounted on carriages 21-24 which are connected by a rod 25 to a carriage 18 transversely movable on a longitudinally movable carriage 11. Mounted on the carriage 18 is a photo-electric scanning head 26 for following a pattern supported on a movable table 17. Signals from the scanning head 26 are fed via an amplifier 28 to an adjusting motor 29 for the head 26, which motor 29 is connected to a resolver 31 whose output controls servomotors 14, 19 for the carriages 11, 18. The magnitude of the amplified signal from the head 26 determines the intensity of an incandescent lamp 33 which controls the internal resistance of a photoresistor 35 connected to the rotor coil 36 of the resolver 31. The speeds of the servomotors 14, 19 are thereby controlled in accordance with the curvature of the line being followed. The photoresistor 35 is also connected to a switch device 43 having a resistor 45 connected to the supply device 44 for the laser 41 and bridged by a normally closed contact 47 connected to a relay 49. When the speed of advance falls below a predetermined value, for example when cutting a radius, the contact 47 is opened so that less energy is supplied by the resistor 45 to the laser 41. The power of the laser may also be continuously varied and the photoelectric copying system may be replaced by a numerical control system.
