Abstract
1393738 Digital level gauge PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Oct 1972 [25 Oct 1971 12 Nov 1971 29 June 1972 13 Oct 1972] 48406/72 Heading G4H A quantity level guage has a plurality of light emitting indicators, each responding to a different level and means to vary the intensity of at least one indicator in dependence on the level. The quantity is expressed as a voltage and this is applied to a plurality of voltage comparators, each with a different reference voltage and each associated with one of the light-emitting indicators. The embodiment described is a vehicle fuel gauge. Variable resistors 6, 7 operated by a float in the fuel tank provides a base emitter voltage to TR1 from the power supply (1 is positive), as TR1 conducts a voltage proportional to the level in the tank is generated across emitter resistor 3. This voltage is applied to the bases of transistors TR2, TR4, TR5 and TR6 which have lamps 8, 9, 10, 11 respectively connected between their collectors and the positive-rail and the base and emitter resistor and the diodes where appropriate are arranged such that each transistor conducts sufficiently to light the associated lamp brightly at a different predetermined voltage. For example, lamp 8 may be at the desired brightness when the tank is one quarter full, with intensity reducing to zero when the tank is empty. Similarly lamp 9 may be at full brightness with a half-full tank and zero brightness at the quarter-full position. Generator G produces an intermittent voltage which will cause lamp 8 to flash from the intensity determined by TR2 base voltage to full brightness-this flashing becoming more noticeable as the tank level nears zero. This flashing may be applied to any or all of the lamps. The lamps may be connected via a decoding circuit so that only one lights at a time. A circuit with a time constant of 1-10 seconds or hysteresis circuit may be used to damp out fluctuations in input voltage.
