1393643 Controlling ion-exchange apparatus DART INDUSTRIES INC 21 March 1973 [6 April 1972] 13624/73 Heading B1J A method of controlling the position of liquid-liquid interfaces in a liquid-solids contacting apparatus comprising a loop having a pulsing section, a loading section, and a stripping section, at least a major portion of said loop being filled with a solid sorption medium, wherein solids are periodically moved a predetermined distance corresponding to volume V p by means of a pulse fluid introduced to the pulsing section, fed containing at least one sorbable materal and at least one non-sorbable material is periodically introduced to the loading section, stripping fluid is periodically introduced to the stripping section, a first product comprising sorbable materials is periodically recovered from a location between the feed and stripping fluid inlet points and a second product comprising non-sorbable material is periodically racovered from a location between the feed and pulse fluid inlet points, comprises measuring the volume V PL of pulse fluid necessary to move the solids said predetermined distance V P , after completion of the introduction of pulse fluid introducing a volume V R of rinse fluid into the loop countercurrent to the direction of flow of said pulse fluid, the relationship between volumes V R , V PL , and V P being about V R = V PL - V P (1 - α), where α is the void fraction of the solids, and removing a waste fluid which includes a portion of said pulse fluid from a section of the loop adjacent to said pulsing section. As applied to ion-exchange loop 10, feed enters from line 1 at 7 into loading section 8 and flows through the bed to outlet 15 thence to waste fluid tank 30, the resin in section 8 having absorbed a component thereof. The resin in section 8 is then rinsed (see below) and moved in part into stripping section 45 by a pulse of liquid entering at 130. In section 45 the resin is regenerated by removal of the sorbed component, and then passes with the next pulse into overflow section 61 where is it backwashed. The rinse fluid which entered at 39 and rinsed section 8 leaves via section 45 and line 70, taking with it the sorbed component removed from the resin.
