Abstract

1393525 Automatic voltage control JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 19 April 1972 [29 April 1971] 12247/71 Heading G3R A battery charging system for a road vehicle comprises and alternator 11 supplying a battery 15 through a full wave rectifier 12 and a conventional transistor voltage regulator controlling the field winding 32 of the alternator to regulate the battery voltage, which is sensed by a resistance chain 23, 24 connected across the battery through a diode 22 and resistance 7 forming part of the circuit of a load 5 supplied by the battery, the arrangement being such that the regulated voltage is modified by the current supplied to this load, which may be lighting or a load controlled by the ignition switch 19. The resistance 7 may be formed by a portion of the lead from the battery 15 to the load 5. The invention is particularly applicable to conditions in which the battery temperature can become very high, e.g. 75‹C, and a comparison is made between the operation of the regulator at this temperature and the operation at a lower temperature, e.g. 20‹C. A resistor 25 connected between the chain 23, 24 and the rectifier 12 normally maintains the diode 22 forward biased but, if the lead 13 becomes disconnected from the battery, the alternator voltage rises to increase the potential at the junction of resistors 23, 25 and so reverse bias the diode 22, the subsequent regulation occurring at the voltage between the lines 13, 14.
