Abstract

1393500 1,2-Dimethyl-5-ethoxycarbonylamino-imidazole LA CELLOPHANE 19 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 19125/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] 1,2 - Dimethyl - 5 - ethoxycarbonylammo - imidazole is prepared by treating 2-methyl-5- aniline-carbonyl-imidazole with HBr to produce 2-methylimidazole-5-carboxylic acid which is reacted with methanol and HCl to produce 2- methyl-5-methoxycarbonylimidazole. This compound is reacted with diazomethane to produce 1,2 - dimethyl - 5 - methoxycarbonyl - imidazole which is treated with hydrazine to obtain the corresponding carbohydrazide. This is reacted with sodium nitrite in HCl to produce the corresponding 5-azide which on treatment with hot ethanol gives the desired product.
