Abstract

1393061 Photo-electric sorting apparatus SPHERE INVESTMENTS Ltd 22 March 1973 13892/73 Heading G1A Photo-electric sorting apparatus utilizes an array of photo-diodes operated in a pliotron flux storage mode and scanned electrically. As shown, objects to be sorted 12 are conveyed by a belt 10, illuminated by a light, infrared or ultraviolet source (not shown), and reflected light imaged by lens 16 in the plane of photo-diode array 20. This can consist of a large number (e.g. 500) provided by an integrated circuit arrangement also including respective FET gates 21 and units of shift register 23. A number of such diodes divide each of a plurality of sorting channels corresponding to those a-j in pneumatic ejector array 14, 15. Electrical scanning takes place under control of clock 24, which sequentially controls via shift register 23, the switches 21 so that they are sequentially momentarily switched on. At these instants, each respective photo-diode, which has during the rest of the scan been discharging in proportion to the incident illumination, is recharged in resistance 34 and line 22. This results in a charging current pulse across resistor 34, contributing to the overall video signal on line 31. The video may be converted, if desired, to binary form at 35 and is supplied to demultiplexer 30, which under the control of clock 24 via divider 27, divides the video signal back up into time portions corresponding to the channels a-j across the width of the sorter. Each processing channel includes a decision and timing circuit 36 and an ejection control device 37. This latter circuitry may be similar to that used in Specification No 1152407.
