Abstract

139,278. Wilson, S. C. Feb. 12, 1919. Reciprocating shelves.-An apparatus for drying wool by the circulation of hot air consists of a closed chamber wherein means are provided to cause wool to be carried forward over the perforated surface of a series of travs which are reciprocated horizontally. The chamber enclosing the trays has a layer of insulating-material C<4>, Fig. 1, built into its walls and roof. The perforated trays A, arranged in a tier and secured together, are supported on small runners D carried by an angle-iron framing B built up within the chamber. A rack-bar E secured to the trays gears with a wheel E<2> secured to a shaft E<3>, and a similar wheel secured to the shaft is alternately engaged by two segmental toothed wheels F, F'. Thus the rotation of the segments, which are geared together, imparts a reciprocating movement to the rack-bar E and therefore to the trays. The wool is fed on to the uppermost tray from a shoot C<2> by a shoot-plate J hinged at J<1> to the tray and vibrated by small cams on a rotating shaft J<2>. Delivery shoots G hinged to the trays convey the wool from one tray to another. The means for moving the wool along the surface of the trays consists of rollers H provided with radial or tangential fins h<1>, as shown in Fig. 9, and supported by the framing above the trays. The rollers are rotated, as the trays move forwards, by racks attached to the trays, but are prevented from rotating as the trays move backwards. Thus they bold the wool as the trays move backwards, and therefore push it towards the discharge ends of the trays.
