1392664 Fuel elements SIEMENS AG 2 Feb 1973 [4 Feb 1972] 5430/73 Heading G6C A pre-containing fuel element is manufactured by assembling a plurality of casings with support means to form a fuel element structure in which the casings occupy their final respective positions relative to one another and to the support means, testing the fuel element structure, e.g. for fluid-tightness, transferring the fuel element structure into a closed working space, introducing nuclear fuel into the casings, and finally sealing the casings. It is necessary for only the open ends of the casings to extend into the closed working space, e.g. a glovebox, by way of respective passages in the glovebox wall, and to seal off the individual casings in the passages, e.g. by means of appropriately shaped rubber or plastics chambers adapted to be filled with pressure gas. Contamination of the entire fuel element surface is thus avoided. The fuel rod ends projecting into the glovebox are decontaminated, after the sealing step, within the glovebox.
