Abstract
1392531 Carbon paste BRITISH STEEL CORP (CHEMICALS) Ltd 26 April 1972 [27 April 1972 19 Dec 1972] 19666/72 and 58517/72 Heading C1A A carbon electrode paste which may be used for joining them together eomprises a mixture of pitch and an electrically conductive powder, the mixture being sufficiently viscous to be applied hot as a paste but being such as to set and be substantially non-sticky at normal ambient temperatures, the viscosity of the pitch lying in the range 10 to 150,000 poises at 15À5 C. For electrodes of 3 inches diameter or less the viscosity of the pitch lies in the range 10,000 to 150,000 at 15À5 C., the conducting powder is graphite powder and the proportion of graphite powder to pitch lies in the range of 10 to 40% by weight. In joining the electrodes, the appropriate faces of the electrodes are painted with the paste at elevated temperatures, the thickness of the applied layer be kept to 1 mm. or less. The graphite powder used may have a particle size below 10 microns. An electrode may be coated and stored complete with coating prior to use.
