Abstract

1392391 Boring earth etc; wells &c PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 30 June 1972 [1 July 1971 9 Feb 1972 (2)] 30822/72 Heading E1F '[Also in Division C3] Aqueous gels for use as drilling fluids, fracturing fluids or plugging fluids or for use in fluid drive processes for secondary recovery of mineral oil consist of (a) a water soluble cellulose ether, preferably carboxymethyl cellulose, (b) a water soluble compound, preferably Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 , of a polyvalent metal capable of being reduced to a lower polyvalent state and (c) a water soluble agent, preferably Ma 2 S 2 O 4 , able to reduce at least a portion of the metal of (b) to its lower state. Depending on the intended use the components may be added in various orders, but (b) and (c) are never together in solution without (a). When used as a fracturing fluid (see examples 12-18) in the fracturing of a porous formation penetrated by a well, a basic fluid of (a) plus (b) or (c) in solution is made and pumped down the well under a pressure sufficient to fracture the formation and, during the pumping adding whichever of (b) or (c) was absent from the base fluid. If the formation is susceptible to acid then a slug of acid may be pumped down after the gel. The viscosity of the gel rises after addition of the final component but after a while declines. This facilitates removal of the gel after fracturing. The gels may also be used to plug fractures (see examples 19 and 20) and so prevent loss of drive fluid in fluid drive processes. These gels are formed as above, one of (b) and (c) being withheld until the pumping stage. Examples 8-10 illustrate the suitability of the gels as drive fluids. Example 11 illustrates its use as a drilling fluid.
