Abstract

1391890 Treating I C engine charges FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 18 Sept 1973 [4 Oct 1972] 43627/73 Heading F1B [Also in Division B1] A fuel vapour emission control device, for a vehicle fuel system comprises a canister 30 containing vapour adsorbent material 47 centrally located to provide chambers 40, 42 at opposite ends, a first inlet tube 36 connecting purge air from outside the canister to one end chamber 42, a second tube 26 connected to the opposite end chamber 40 for the flow of desorbed vapours therefrom, additional inlet means 18 to the opposite chamber 40 for admitting fuel vapours, to be adsorbed, at a higher pressure than the pressure in the second tube 26, thereby effecting flow therebetween and baffle means 52 in the opposite end chamber 40 between the second and additional inlets preventing direct communication between the two and forcing flow of fuel vapours through the adsorbent. The baffle 52 consists of an open cell material of predetermined porosity which permits only a restricted passage of fuel vapours which are thus forced to pass through the activated carbon adsorbent. When the engine is started, air is drawn in through the tube 36 and some air passes through the baffle to purge the space around the end of the inlet tube 18. The baffle material is compressible, to accommodate variations in the axial length of the mass of activated carbon, such variations occurring due to variations in density of the material.
