Abstract

1391771 Polymerisation catalyst BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 13 March 1972 [26 Jan 1971 30 June 1971 (2) 23 Dec 1971] 3162/71 30621/71 30622/71 and 2943/72 Heading B1E [Also in Division C3] A catalyst for polymerizing ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and at least one other 1-olefin comprises chromium oxide supported on silica, alumina, zirconia or thoria or composites thereof (e.g. silica-alumina) which is activated by heating to 250 to 1200‹C in the presence of a tetravalent titanium alkoxide (e.g. titanium tetraisopropoxide or titanium tetraethoxide) and a salt in which the anion contains fluorine (e.g. ammonium tetrafluorborate or hexafluorosilicate) and preferably in the presence of air. Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 927966.
