Abstract
1391644 Vehicle safety seats K HERZER [trading as KURT HERZER] 6 July 1972 31564/72 Heading A4J [Also in Division F2] In a vehicle safety seat having an adjustable headrest 9 supported by a backrest 3 and a seat squab 1 supported on a trestle 51 mounted on a seat slide 61, the backrest, trestle and seat slide incorporate energy absorbing devices which are effective on sudden acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle and the headrest is constructed to be crushed by the head of the occupant to form a protective hood on sudden acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle. The headrest cushion 9 which is shown in Figs. 9c and 9d and which is supported for adjustment about a horizontal axis 87 and has its distance from the backrest adjustable comprises crushable lamellae ribs 931, 941, 932, 942, 947 between which foam may be inserted. The backrest has a cushion support frame which comprises upper and lower curved tubes 31, #31or struts (301, 301) Fig 1b (not shown), a curved plate Fig. 3a (not shown), or a plate sandwiched in foam Fig. 3b (not shown), the support frames being connected to the backrest side frames by torsion members 32, 32 or (302, #302) or by members which extend on sudden impact Figs. 4a-4d (not shown). The trestle which is shown in Figs. 5a and 5c may comprise continuously curved tubular frames with torsion levers 51 torsion stretches 52 and frames 53, 54 for connection to the seat 1 and seat slide respectively or a torsion lever 531 with torsion stretches 532 co-operating with lugs 533 or 534 fixed to or forming part of the seat or slide respectively. The seat slide comprises a locking device which locks the two parts of the slide in adjusted position but which is deformable on sudden deceleration or acceleration to absorb energy. In one embodiment of the seat slide shown in Figs. 6a, 6b and 6d the guide rail has locking apertures 615 in which are engaged locking pins 635 or 645, the lower half of pin 635 being bent and all of pin 645 being bent on sudden acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle. In the second embodiment of the seat slide shown in Fig. 7a, the upper sliding rail 717 has a plurality of crushable plastics lamellae which engage in a lock incision in the lower guide rail 711 the lamellae being moveable out of the incision by an actuator pivotally connected to the guide rail to allow for fore and aft adjustment of the seat and being crushed within the incision on sudden acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle.
