Abstract
1391567 Hydraulic couplings L PELLEGRINO and G MIGLIARINI 30 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 15413/73 Heading F2C A fluid coupling for transmitting drive between a casing 10 and a shaft 12 comprises a positive displacement pump mounted between these members and having a pump body 22, this pump drawing in liquid or gas from a chamber 11 and pumping it back to the chamber via an adjustable valve formed between an axially movable number 38 and a part 36 of an annular outlet manifold 35. The pump shown is a gear pump with a sun-wheel on shaft 12 meshing with planet gears 28 rotatably mounted on a cover 18 of the casing 10, but this pump can be a piston pump (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown), a vane pump or a lobe pump. The valve member 38 shown is mounted on an axially movable sleeve 40, spring urged to the open position by springs 56 and movable by rotation of a wheel 48 against this spring bias, the wheel 48 rotating a sleeve 45 which is screwed into a sleeve 49 affixed to a supporting hub 15 for the coupling, the sleeve 45 moving sleeve 40 via a thrust bearing 46. This movement controls the torque transmitted by the coupling. The member 38 in the illustrated embodiment is spring urged by springs 55 to the closed position to speed up the increase of pressure in the coupling and the take up of drive. The coupling is described incorporated in the drive to a winding apparatus wherein the increase in torque transmitted as material is wound on to a drum and the rate of rotation and diameter of the drum decrease and increase respectively serves to keep the tension of the material being wound substantially constant. A relief valve 54 is provided.
