Abstract
1391461 Developing electrostatic latent images INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 22 May 1972 [25 June 1971] 23907/72 Heading G2H Electrostatic images on charge-retaining surfaces are developed by wetting with thin film of a dielectric liquid which is chemically inert towards the surfaces, followed by application of a liquid ink which is immiscible with the dielectric liquid and displaces it from image areas. The dielectric liquid may be a hydrocarbon, a silicone oil, a fluorinated hydrocarbon, a fluorinated ether, olive oil or castor oil, and the ink may be made from a polar liquid with a dissolved dye. Water, formamide and glycols such as ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are suitable. Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose may be included as a thickening agent.
