Abstract
1391209 Boring earth &c DRESSER INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS Ltd 19 June 1972 [19 July 1971] 28620/72 Heading E1F In the use of a tool 48 for positioning or retrieving a core barrel and which may be pumped down a drill string 50 to retrieve the barrel a seal element 82 is engaged with the string to form a seal during pumping and an actuator 72 is operable to move the element so that it does not engage the string to form a seal. The actuator slides on the body 64 of the tool and is urged to the position shown by a spring 78 and adjuster 80 to compress the element to seal against the string. The element is a ring carried by the actuator and looped about one end of a pin 74 in the actuator and engaged by the spring. When the tool engages a lance 107 on the barrel the actuator is moved upwardly to move the element from its sealing position and the lance is gripped by an inclined, spring-pressed washer 90 so that the barrel may be retrieved. If the barrel sticks during retrieval a pin 94 is forced downwardly to free the barrel and prevent breakage of the line 52 manipulating the tool. In a dry hole. a string special section 70, a retaining pin 66 and the element are not used to place the barrel in the core bit, the tool and barrel being connected and lowered to the bit. On reaching the bit, the inertia of the tool causes the washer to be retained by a spring end 98 to release the barrel to permit withdrawal of the tool. When core drilling upwardly, the tool in conjunction with the special section 70 acts as a check valve preventing drainage of fluid from the hole as a section is added to the drill string.
