Abstract

1390955 Wells &c OTIS ENG CORP 5 May 1972 [17 May 1971 1 May 1972] 21091/72 Heading E1F A well passing through a producing formation F has production tubing T and a packer P-2 set above the formation, the tubing being movable downwardly to stop production in the event of a disaster or hazardous condition. As shown in Fig. 1 the tubing when raised for production is supported by dogs D, and when lowered to shut down production engages a packer P-1 and the well bottom B. Instead of resting on the well bottom the tubing may have a shock absorber engaging the packer P-2, and the tubing may have a piston supported by hydraulic pressure in a cylinder at the wellhead. The tubing may have a lower end which is substantially closed, or formed as a shock absorber, the production inlet to the tubing being side perforations in the tubing. The tubing may have a closed lower end and a side port which co-acts with a side port in the depending sleeve of a single packer. In the modification shown in Fig. 10 the tubing T has a lower part TS having a piston 111 sliding in cylinder 110 carried by the upper part, the lower part being raised for production by fluid supplied by a line CFL to the cylinder. In a modification (Fig. 11, not shown) in which the upper end of the tubing has a cylinder sliding over a piston fixed to the wellhead, and the cylinder is held in the raised position by locking dogs, the tubing may be moved to raised position by a finishing tool. In the construction shown in Fig. 14, the lower part TS-1 of the tubing has a plug 251 and the tubing is raised for production by supplying fluid from a source 270 through the upper part of the tubing and the upper part of the part TS-1 and through an aperture 234 into a cylinder space 235, the production passing through apertures 260 to the annulus 220 to discharge through the line Y.
